DIY Rustic Galvanized Finish

I have had my heart set on one the galvanized tiered platters for a while. Unfortunately most of the ones I see for sale come with a high price tag that I can’t justify. I’ve seen several DIY tutorials on pinterest and decided it was time to make one of my own! I’m going to need/want it for my new house so why not go ahead and make one!

I picked up this dull and dinged up thin pie platter at the thrift store the other day for $1 and decided to give this project a try! There are many different ways to give something an old galvanized appearance but for this project I used the painting technique that I read about at Blissfully Ever After.

You will need: pie plate or whatever item you want to “galvanize”, black acrylic paint, metallic silver acrylic paint, brown acrylic paint, paint brush, sponge dabber and foam brush

Here is how I achieved the old rusted galvanized look:

Take your plate or whatever object you want to give the old galvanized finish to, and paint it black. I painted two coats to get full coverage. Let that dry.

Take your sponge dabber and sponge paint the silver metallic paint on top of the black paint giving it the sponge texture. Let that dry.

Using your sponge dabber again, dab a small amount of brown paint in specific areas that you would normally see rust (corners, edges, etc.) I didn’t care for the sponge texture for the brown so I took my foam brush and firmly applied pressure and rubbed the brown into the desired areas. You don’t want too much brown so use sporadically. If you added too much just go back with your sponge dabber and apply some silver texture on top. Let that dry.

This project was so cheap, simple and quick, all of those steps took less than an hour. The paint dries very quickly so I was able to move onto the next step once I completed both sides of the platter. Luckily I had all of the paint and sponges already so the only thing I had to buy was the platter.

Look for the rest of the DIY galvanized platter tutorial coming soon!
