DIY Burlap Wreath
As you can probably tell from all my DIY posts, I’ve become pretty obsessed with almost anything that is burlap. It’s cheap and there are tons of DIY things you can do with it. Plus I think it makes my house feel more cozy…if that even makes any sense.
Anyways, I’ve been wanting to make a burlap wreath for a while and finally found time over Christmas break to do it. I did not post the full tutorial on how to actually make the burlap wreath because to be honest, there are already tons out there! I read at least 5 prior to making my wreath. Just google or search “DIY Burlap Wreath” on pinterest and you’ll find several tutorials. There are tons of cute ones out there with different embellishments (different color/patterned burlap, initials, bows, flowers, etc.). I saw one on etsy that I loved with a flower on it and so that is what I will be attempting to re-create.
Here’s what you need:
- 2-3 rolls of 6 inch burlap ($3 per roll when marked 50% off at Hobby Lobby)
- Wire wreath frame – I believe mine was 16 or 18 inches (from Michaels for less than $3)
- Embellishments of your choice – I used flowers (1 large swag on sale at Hobby Lobby for $8) – I forgot to take a picture of the swag before I cut the flowers off but you get the idea
- Pipe Cleaners – preferably brown, could use floral wire or twine – whatever you have around your house
Pretty much all you do is secure one end to the wire wreath frame with a pipe cleaner and start weaving it over and under, over and under about a million times it seemed like! I just fluffed the loops as I went. You may have to secure the ends of the rolls underneath the wreath with pipe cleaner.
WARNING: This will take a while! It probably took me two full hours to finish the wreath alone.
ANOTHER WARNING: You will have “burlap sheddings” all over you and your floor when this is complete! My pants and carpet were covered!
Once the burlap wreath was complete, I just cut the flowers and pieces of the flower swag that I wanted to use on my wreath. I stuck the stems into the burlap and secured with hot glue. I used a red roll of burlap ribbon to tie it on the door.
I love the way it turned out! I have it hanging on the coat closet door that you see right when you walk in our front door. This wreath roughly cost me about $20 to make and they sell on etsy for around $50. The flowers were my largest expense so you could do this cheaper by just using different burlap or bows to embellish.
Added 1/23/14 – I still have lots of burlap ribbon and was looking into doing another wreath and as I was looking into other ideas, I realized I did my wreath the hard/long way! Luckily, it still turned out ok but I recommend watching some youtube video’s before doing one for yourself to save you the time that I went through! That’s the one hard thing about reading tutorials vs watching how they are actually doing it. I plan to make another one soon and I’ll try to re-post with the steps so you may not get confused like I did!
