Using a Planter as a Tree Skirt
I really LOVE all the Christmas Tree Collars available right now! I have never really loved any tree skirts and there are so many adorable collars out from wicker to wood to galvanized…I just adore them all and I am so glad they’re trendy right now.
My husband and I have always wanted a whiskey barrel to use somewhere in our house but haven’t ever figured out the right place to use one. This spring we bought a half barrel planter from Home Depot to use on our porch which was the perfect piece for our porch! It’s the perfect rustic accessory! My plan originally was for us to make a wooden tree collar but then I got the idea to use one of these planters and it was much easier than trying to make one ourselves and after buying wood, it probably didn’t cost much more!
We went and purchased another whiskey barrel planter from Home Depot to use for our tree. You could use a jigsaw and cut the whole bottom out to make it completely open like most tree collars but we wanted to keep the bottom in tact so that we can use it as a planter in the future if we wanted. Using a drill to start the hole and then a jigsaw to cut it larger, we (when I saw we, I mean my awesome hubby) cut a large enough hole for the base of our tree to slide into and flipped it upside down. It was a little tricky getting the base into the tree stand under the barrel but we finally got it right. We also had to put a couple pieces of wood underneath the planter to elevate the stand enough so the tree base would lock into place and not lean. This would all have been avoided by cutting the bottom completely out so hindsight, that may have been the easier solution!
But I really love how it turned out and I also love that it’s something a little more unique than the tree collars you can purchase! These planters are $40 which is similarly priced, if not cheaper than a lot of the tree collars out for sale! Plus we can always use it somewhere else in the future as a planter!
And of course my little photobomber loves any pictures where I am sitting on the floor.
What do you think? Have you hopped on the tree collar trend? I will be personally sad to go back to tree skirts!
