DIY Floral Initial

It’s finally starting to warm up and feel like Spring and I’m so anxious to start buying flowers and plants for our porch. I’ve seen several ideas of these floral initials and I thought that they were the perfect Spring/Summer Front Door décor. Fake flowers can get pretty expensive so I decided to try out the flowers from Dollar Tree and they worked great for this project! Supplies Needed:

• Floral Foam
• Floral Stems
• Wire Cutters
• Ribbon (Optional)

Here is how I made it:

Step 1: Create your foam initial

An “H” was pretty simple to make luckily but don’t get discouraged if your initial is more difficult, it will be covered with flowers where you can work on the shape if the foam isn’t perfect. I bought three floral foam rectangles from Hobby Lobby and I had some smaller blocks of floral foam from Dollar Tree. I wanted my initial to be fairly large so I cut one of the foam rectangles in half to add some height to my “H”. I just hot glued the foam together.  My Foam letter is about 18 inches tall.

Step 2: Prep Flower Stems

For a 18” letter you will need approximately 18-20 stems from Dollar Tree. I bought a variety of color and size but you can customize to what you want for your door. I organized the stems by large, medium and small flowers. Then cut your flowers with wire cutters leaving a 1 to 2 inch stem to stick in the foam.

Step 3: Apply Flowers

Start with your large flowers first and apply sporadically. There is no rhyme or reason to the madness, I just tried to mix up the colors and sizes well. I applied some on the corners/edges of the letter to fully cover the foam, especially on the top where it will be more easily seen. Then I applied the medium flower and then filled in the blank spaces with the small flowers. If I had some odd spacing or blank spots just pull them out and rearrange. The foam holds the stems really well so there is no reason to glue them down. If you need more stems you can easily buy more and add them later.

Tip: If the stem doesn’t have wire, use a pencil or other pointed object to help dig it into the floral foam.

Step 4 (Optional):  Since mine will be hanging on my front door I wanted to add a bow to hang it from. I used ribbon I already had and tied a bow with floral wire and then just attached the tails to the letter. You can hot glue or secure with whatever you already have around the house. I had some upholstery nails lying around so I just used those to attach the bow.

 

That’s all! This project cost me under $30 including all the floral stems and floral foam. I love how much it stands out against our door and definitely see this being something I use year after year! This project was very quick and easy and great for those who want a simple DIY project! They would also be super cute in a little girls room or a babies nursery with more subtle flowers!
