Custom Sweet Home Alabama Burlap Hanger
I was recently contacted by an old friend from church who stumbled upon my Hamby Home Decor facebook page and blog. She saw my Home Sweet Home burlap hanger and had an idea of one she wanted for herself!
She emailed me her idea and I got to work! I love the way this Sweet Home Alabama burlap hanger turned out! This burlap hanger could be done in any colors but she chose red white and black to support her Crimson Tide. I love the subtle “ROLL TIDE” in this hanger!
I started out by sketching out the state of Alabama. Luckily several of the lines on this state are straight and I can use a ruler and the rest don’t have to be exact since it’s difficult to be precise with burlap. I just did the best I could by just “eyeballing” it. I have found that the charcoal pencils work best for sketching on burlap.
Next, I painted the chevron lines, once again just free-handing the lines, they don’t have to be perfect. Let this dry completely before moving on to your next step.
She sent me this inspiration for the words so I just free-handed it to look similar.
Here is my process anytime I’m adding words to a burlap hanger. I sketch it out with a charcoal pencil (picture not shown), then I go over it with a small paint brush and acrylic paint, then I clean it up and fill in with a fabric paint pen while it is wet. Fabric paint is great for words because the small tip gives you more more precision and control than a paint brush. I went back and thickened the lines again after this picture to help it stand out against the chevron.
Once the paint is all dry you follow the steps I’ve mentioned in other burlap hanger blog posts including cut out the hanger, hot glue and stuff. Then add the hanger and any embellishments you want! I decided to try something different and trace the outside of the state with a black paint pen to give it a more finished look! I love the way this custom Sweet Home Alabama hanger turned out! I definitely think I will make more of these and probably an Auburn version as well (although I will be partial to the Bama version) 😉
