DIY Floral Trunk Decor

DIY Floral Trunk Decor

I am so excited to be teaming up with Hobby Lobby for this sponsored DIY project that is perfect for summertime decor.

Using florals is one of my favorite ways to decorate for Spring and Summer. I was walking through the Wood Pile aisle of Hobby Lobby which has so many awesome raw wood pieces that are great for any DIY lovers. The first thing I spotted was this wooden trunk and immediately envisioned its summer decor potential. Isn’t it funny how sometimes seeing one single item can spark a whole project? My wheels started turning and I’m thrilled with how it all turned out!

Supplies:

  • Wooden Trunk
  • Small Wooden Sign
  • ModgePodge
  • Scrapbook Paper – I needed two sheets
  • Paint
  • Florals

Steps to Make it:

Step One: Take off all hardware on the wooden trunk

Step Two: Paint Trunk, inside and out. You can use any type of paint but I chose the chalky spray paint to make it simple and quick.

Step2

Tip: I never love the texture that spray paint leaves, by lightly running sandpaper over it after each coat has dried will help smooth out the finish.

Step Three: Modge Podge scrapbook paper onto the inside of the top of the chest and trim excess with exacto knife or scissors. The paper bubbled up for me so I took my palm sander to it to give it an older and more distressed look.

Step3

Step Four: Put the hardware back on to assemble the trunk.

Step Five: Arrange any faux florals in the chest. I loved these wild flower looking stems I found in the floral section and tried to buy colors that complimented the scrapbook paper.

Optional: I picked up a small wooden sign in the same woodpile section to make small sign for the vignette. I designed and printed a cheat sheet for me to use as a stencil. Using graphite paper, I just traced over the design to give me outlines. Then I just filled in with acrylic paint. I think this small detail really finished off the floral trunk decor!

This was a simple and quick makeover for this trunk and would be great sitting on a dining table, console table or anywhere you’d like to spruce up for summer! I have mine in my dining room so it’s the first thing you see when you walk into our house!

You can customize this DIY floral trunk to suit your style by painting the trunk with different colors or techniques, using scrapbook paper that compliments your home and using any type of florals that really fit the style you are going for!
