Green Estate Sale Cabinet Makeover

before-and-after-green-cabinet

As you probably know, I love thrifting, junking, etc. I have found some of my favorite pieces that way and for such awesome prices, not to mention they’re usually one of kind items! My dad actually introduced me to www.estatesales.net and it’s an awesome resource! You type in your zip code and it shows you all the upcoming estate sales in the surrounding areas and gives you the sale info, what kind of items and often gives you lots of pictures to preview the sale. I try to check the upcoming sales every mid-week just to see if there are any awesome ones coming up that I won’t want to miss.

A couple weeks ago I was bored and decided to see what the sales looked like when I saw this awesome green chippy cabinet in the garage for $40 and knew I had to have it. I immediately texted the number listed and told her to hold it for me. NOTE: Most of these estate sale companies will hold items but by holding it you are committed to buying it. I didn’t care as long as that baby was mine! It was larger than I thought and solid wood so it was pretty heavy. I finally got it home after some begging and pleading the hubby…who is the BEST! 🙂

I left it outside and took a hose to it to wash it all off and get rid of the spider egg sacs (yuck) and let it dry. Now, I love chippy and rustic but the top was super rough: paint stains, chipping, wood bowing, etc. Although I do like that style, since I was using it in my house I decided I wanted a more finished looking top to coordinate with the style of my house, which the best way I can describe is traditional rustic.

I purchased a sheet of pine and had it cut to size at the store. That Saturday I spent the afternoon sanding the pine top and staining it while I gave my hubby the demo duty of getting that old top off. I used Dark Walnut stain and then a dark wax to seal it (mostly because that’s the only wax I had and I only had a glossy poly at the house). I actually am so glad I waxed it instead of poly…I love how the wood feels with the wax’d smooth finish and it looks gorgeous! We glued the new top on and secure it with some screws and I am in LOVE Y’ALL!!! It’s even better than what I expected when I originally saw it online.

I wanted new knobs for the two doors and decided that drawer pulls would be just the character it needed. I chose these rustic iron pulls from Home Depot and the matching knobs here. We added those and VOILA! I’ve got new/old chest with drawers for about $80!

This piece would be perfect in the dining room as a sideboard or as a baby changing table or other places but I am using it in our living room where the console table used to be for now! It was perfect to store our DVD player, cable box, etc. and also hide all of the cables! You’ve seen this piece a lot already because it was the area I restyled for the Shop the House Design Challenge – Fall Edition. It’s been a lot of fun to decorate and I just know this is going to be one of those pieces that I will LOVE for years and years!
