My Living Room Mood Board

I’ve seen several mood boards (aka style boards) for fashion, weddings, and home decor but I’ve never actually created one and I never really understood the whole process of creating one until now. A mood board seemed like the perfect tool to use while building a house. It can be useful to reference at the home design center and especially while out shopping for things to use in that space. I’ve found it really helpful for me while I was out shopping for furniture, rugs and other home décor since the room doesn’t actually exist yet. Usually when I’m out shopping I know the space and know where things are needed but in this case, I’m just using my imagination and hoping it all comes together and looks as great as it does in my head. The mood board helps takes some of that guessing away.

We got several new things for the living room (couches, rug, etc.) but I also wanted to be able to use some of the things I had from our old house. I used brown, tan, red and green in the living room of our last house but I’m using blue and white china in our kitchen and need that to flow into the living room now that we have an open floor plan. I chose darker furniture and rugs for easy maintenance with dogs and future kids but I didn’t want the room to feel too dark so I want to lighten it up with the light accent tables and decor. Creating a mood board helped me narrow down the color palette and overall look and feel of the space. It’s helped keep me from being overwhelmed by the idea of decorating a new large and very open space and also helps keep a cohesive look.

I know there are several mood board sites out there but I decided to use Adobe InDesign and pictures from my phone and the internet to piece together my living room mood board. I know my mood board will continue to change and evolve and I will keep adding to it until the room is complete.

Details of my Living Room Mood Board as it is today:

Color Palette: Brown, Blue, Read, Green and Ivory

Couch: Marbled Brown Leather Couch and Loveseat (Purchased from Restoration Furniture)

Rug: Purchased from Belk

Console Table: Table and Décor details can be found here

Side Table: Purchased two Queen Anne style side tables on Craigslist with plans to paint/distress

Ottoman: Searching for a square coffee table that I can turn into an ottoman similar to this one. I’m thinking solid blue won’t clash with the rug but will be dark enough not to worry about staining.
