DIY Faux Barn Door

Do you remember my new console table I ordered? I spent this weekend finishing up some projects and re-decorating the new table and couldn’t wait to share it with you.

We don’t have a fireplace mantel to decorate so my entry way table is the one area I really put a lot of  thought into decorating. I found this AKA Design barn door used on a mantel on pinterest and fell in love with the idea.  I knew it would look perfect with the new table and I liked the contrast of the off white and dark brown wood. Plus I loved that it’s something that I could update the wreath, or decor on the barn door throughout the year.

Things you need:

  • Lumber
  • Gate Hinges
  • Screws
  • Stain

We didn’t have any old wood to use for this project unfortunately so we took a trip to Lowes to pick up lumber. I bought a 2x10x12 and had them cut it there into 4 – 3ft boards. Unfortunately they didn’t have any wood that was 10 inches wide that was only 1 inch thick so the barn door is pretty heavy so I recommend buying  a 1x10x12 if you can find it.

I also got a 1x6x8 board and we cut it at home to fit across the other boards (approximately 40 inches long)

We laid it it all out together and screwed the top two boards onto the back four.

I sanded all the edges and stained it with a dark walnut stain.

Once it was dry we added the gate hinges. This is my favorite part of the gate. I picked out some that were a little more decorative and I absolutely love the way they turned out. They come in a pack of 2 hinges which was 4 pieces, exactly what you need for this gate.

I LOVE the way it all came together.

Here are the decorative details:

  • Wood rose wreath – Home Goods
  • Candle Sticks – moved from another room in the house – also from Home Goods
  • Galvanized Bucket – Home Goods – added a burlap ribbon and painted our “established/wedding date”
  • Misc Decorative Balls in Bucket – Bag from Kirklands with some I already had
  • Ampersand Burlap Canvas – DIY
  • Vase – Purchased in Jamaica on our honeymoon with flowers from Home Goods over a year ago
  • Frame – Hobby Lobby – I’ve also had for a while

Home Goods is dangerous for me! I would love to have almost everything in that store!

I also love how well it goes with the new dog corner. Although it wasn’t intentional, the picture frames used in the dog collage match almost perfectly with the new table!
